The domed tortoises are usually larger in size and do not have the upward thrust at the front of the carapace. There are variations among size and shape however, two main morphological forms exist – those with a domed carapace and those known as ‘saddle-backed’. The Galapagos giant tortoise is the largest chelonian in the world and has around 12 subspecies, dotted along the length of the Galapagos Islands.
